Film trailer: Madonna's 'W.E.'
The first trailer for the second film directed by pop singer Madonna (Filth and Wisdom), W.E., was released November 20 after it leaked online a few weeks ago.
The dramatic story follows two romances separated by 60 years -- the affair between England's King Edward VIII and American divorce Wallis Simpson and a contemporary romance between a young woman -- Wally Winthrop -- and a Russian.
The footage begins during the 1930s with the couple's controversial affair that led to Edward abdicating the throne to marry for love. Meanwhile, the contemporary character in New York finds it the ultimate romance, one that may parallel her own relationship.
The film, co-written by Madonna with Alek Keshishian, the director of her 1991 documentary Truth or Dare, premiered at the Venice Film Festival.
It stars Abbie Cornish (Limitless, Sucker Punch), James D'Arcy (Master and Commander) and Andrea Riseborough (Never Let Me Go, Made in Dagenham).
W.E. opens in theaters in the UK on January 20, the US on February 3, and the Netherlands and Sweden in March, followed by other markets.
