Madonna Tops Elvis With 12th U.K. No. 1

M adonna landed her 12th U.K. No. 1 album on Sunday (April 1) with "MDNA" to overtake Elvis Presley as the solo artist with the most chart-topping albums in the market. Chris Brown's "Turn Up The Music" gave him his first U.K. No. 1 single as a lead artist.

Madonna's span of album bestsellers began in September 1985, when "Like A Virgin" climbed to the summit, ten months after it first charted. She achieved two further No. 1 albums in the 1980s, three in the 1990s (including the "Evita" soundtrack, which also featured other artists), and five in the 2000s. She now pulls clear of Presley's collection of 11 titles. "MDNA" sold 56,000 copies last week, according to the Official Charts Company.

From the new set, "Masterpiece" also hit the singles chart at No. 68 and opening single "Give Me All Your Luvin'," featuring Nicki Minaj and M.I.A., reappeared on the top 75 at No. 71. Madonna's 2009 compilation "Celebration" dipped 35-37 and Rhino/Warner Music's "The Complete Studio Albums 1983-2008" charted at No. 70.

David Guetta's "Nothing But The Beat" held at No. 2 on the new chart, with 22,000 sales, and fellow Virgin artist Emeli Sand moved back 4-3 with "Our Version of Events." Adele also moved up a place to No. 4 with Adele's "21" while Jessie J, now installed as a primetime fixture on BBC1's Saturday evening talent series "The Voice," reaped the benefit with a 23-5 climb for "Who You Are." Katy Perry's "Part Of Me" fell from the top of the singles chart to No. 4, but her last album "! Teenage Dream" still rebounded 34-6. Last week's bestselling album, Paul Weller's "Sonik Kicks," fell sharply to No. 10. "Ultimate Clubland" debuted atop the compilations chart.

Chris Brown's previous highest ranking as the lead artist in the U.K. was with his chart debut "Run It," featuring Juelz Santana, in 2006. He matched that as a guest on Chipmunk's "Champion" last year. 83,000 sales of "Turn Up The Music" last week put it well ahead of Sean Paul's "She Doesn't Mind," which held at No. 2 on 59,000. Nicki Minaj's "Starships" moved back in the right direction, 5-3, while London rapper/singer Plan B's "Ill Manors," the title track from his third album, due in May, opened at No. 6.
