ENCINITAS, Calif. (AP) - It may seem like a miracle, but the Surfing Madonna finally has a new home.
The 10-foot mosaic was installed Monday on a wall between a cafe and a surf shop on North Coast Highway 101 in the San Diego County community of Leucadia.
The building owner is friends with the artist, Mark Patterson, who says it's great to see his work back up.
The mosaic depicts the Virgin of Guadalupe surfing a wave along with the words "Save the Ocean." It mysteriously appeared on a wall beneath a train bridge in neighboring Encinitas last year but was removed because it was unauthorized.
Since then, efforts to find the artwork a new home had failed - until Monday.
