School holds dinner fundraiser

Lovers of Mediterranean cuisine, and those who are curious enough to try it, are invited to participate in a Monday dinner fundraiser to support sending Mount Madonna School's 16-student junior class to South Africa in June 2014.

Dinner, at Zameen Mediterranean Cuisine, 7528 Soquel Drive in Aptos, is $40 in advance and includes vegetarian and meat entrees. The fundraiser runs from 6-9 p.m.

The youth's trip to Cape Town is the first stop among many for this group in MMS's "Values in World Thought" program.

Group to host attorney as guest speaker

The National Active and Retired Federal Employees group is hosting Creighton Mendivil, directing attorney for Senior Network Services, at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Seascape Golf Club, 610 Clubhouse Drive.

The speaker will discuss issues seniors face. The topic will be continued on April 10 when guest speaker Lynne Murphy discusses "Financial Fitness."

NARFE meets the second Wednesday of every month at Seascape Golf Club. Lunch is $17.

Nominations for top senior volunteer sought

The

Salute to Senior Service program, sponsored by Home Instead Inc., franchisor of the Home Instead Senior Care network, honors adults 65 and older who give at least 15 hours a month as a volunteer.

Nominations for outstanding senior volunteers will be accepted through March 31, with state winners selected by popular vote at SalutetoSeniorService.com from April 15 to April 30, 2013. A panel of senior care experts will pick the national honoree.

Home Instead Inc. will donate $500 to each of the state winners' favorite nonprofit and their stories will be posted on the Salute to Senior Service Wall of Fame.

To complete and submit a nomination form online for a senior age 65 or older who volunteers at least 15 hours a month, and to view the contest's official rules, go to SalutetoSeniorService.com. Completed nomination forms also can be mailed to Salute to Senior Service, P.O. Box 285, Bellevue, NE 68005.

Mission hosts events through March

Four special events will be held through March at Santa Cruz Mission State Park 144 School St., Santa Cruz.

Visitors can see how the mission participated in a world economy in the early 1800s during "Building Methods at the Mission" 1-2 p.m. March 16.

From 1-2 p.m. March 23, visitors will learn how clothing was made in "Wool, Spinning and Weaving", how to make wax candles from 1-4 p.m. March 29, and how to make a luminaria 1-4 p.m. March 30.

Library hosts local author talk, signing

Local author Barbara Bloom will talk about her writing experience, including her collection of poems, "On the Water Meridian," as part of the Porter Memorial Library's "Meet the Author" program, starting at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Bloom, now semi-retired from teaching English and creative writing at Cabrillo College, also will discuss her memoir about her life in British Columbia, "Steering Home." Bloom also teaches a memoir-writing workshop at the library, located at 3050 Porter Street, Soquel.

The "Meet the Author" programs are informal coffee hours around the fireplace where local authors discuss their works, answer questions from the audience and autograph copies of their books. The programs are free and open to the public.

! Meeting f! ocuses on updating Felton town plan

Fifth District Supervisor Bruce McPherson will host a meeting 7-9 p.m. March 19 to discuss updates to Felton's town plan, which was adopted in 1987.

The plan outlines goals and objectives for future growth, but many of the items in the original document already been completed.

Golf tournament has openings

Golfers are needed Friends of Hospice of Santa Cruz County's 13th annual Fairways for Kids Golf Tournament at Seascape Golf Club on May 8.

The day will kick off with lunch and includes 18 holes of golf, contests, a buffet dinner and a silent auction. Proceeds benefit grief programs for children and adolescents by Hospice of Santa Cruz County.

Reading event benefits local nonprofit for at-risk youth

The Capitola Book Caf is hosting UnChained Writers at 7:30 p.m. March 28 at 1475 41st Ave., Capitola.

The evening will feature authors and musical guests to benefit local nonprofit UnChained. The organization looks to serve at-risk youth by pairing them with shelter dogs to train.

Authors including Laurie R. King, David Swanger and Len Anderson will read from their own works and the works of at-risk youth, and 10 percent of book sales and other donations during the event will go toward the purchase of a van to transport the dogs.
