Madonna in fresh Malawi school plan after fiasco

Madonna has announced she has teamed up with an American charity to build schools in Malawi , reviving a project she had earlier dropped due to financial mismanagement and lawsuits. "This remains a very big priority in my life and I am excited that with the help of buildOn we can maintain our ongoing commitment to move forward efficiently," the US singer's organisation Raising Malawi said in a statement issued Monday. BuildOn, a US-based organisation, has already built 54 primary schools in the poor southern African country. In 2010, the singer, who has two adopted children from Malawi, laid a foundation stone to build an academy for girls in Chinkota village, outside the capital Lilongwe. A year later the school project was cancelled because of mismanagement and local employees sacked. Eight staff at the failed $15 million (11.3 million euros) Raising Malawi Academy for Girls (RMAG) filed suit in March 2011, claiming they were let go without proper procedures. ...

Madonna plans 10 schools in Malawi with new partner

(Reuters) - Madonna on Monday announced plans to build 10 new schools in Malawi with a new partner after mismanagement forced the pop star to scrap her first project there last year. The singer, who has adopted two children from the impoverished southern African nation, said she hoped the 10 new schools would educate at least 1,000 children a year, half of them girls. That is double the number of children she hoped to help with her previously planned academy for girls, which was scrapped in March 2011 because of mismanagement and cost overruns. Madonna said her Raising Malawi charity was teaming up this time with the non-profit group buildOn, which has constructed 54 primary schools in Malawi in the last 19 years. "I am excited that with the help of buildOn, we can maintain our ongoing commitment to move forward efficiently. We now will be able to serve twice as many children as we would have served with our old approach," Madonna said in a statement. "I have learned ...

Madonna's Raising Malawi charity says it plans to build 10 schools, partners with buildOn

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Nearly six years after it was created, Madonna's Raising Malawi charity is set to break ground on the construction of schools in the impoverished country, but they will be run by the local community, not the superstar's organization. According to organizers, work on the first school will start on March 30 in the Kasungu area, about 80 miles from the capital of Lilongwe, and all of the schools should be built by June 2013. Raising Malawi is providing $300,000 to the non-governmental organization buildOn to develop the schools. They'll serve about 1,000 boys and girls in the southern African nation. "This remains a very big priority in my life and I am excited that with the help of buildOn we can maintain our ongoing commitment to move forward efficiently," Madonna said in a statement provided to The Associated Press. Madonna: No Nipples at Super Bowl

On a fall afternoon in New York's Central Park , hundreds of curious onlookers and paparazzi watched as two comely young actresses, Abbie Cornish and Andrea Riseborough , performed a scene on a park bench. When a rock band sound check across the park disrupted the scene , the movie's director trotted off to ask the band for a reprieve. "The entirety of Central Park followed her," said Riseborough, "and left Abbie and I sitting on the bench, at which point we just looked at each other like, 'Well, this obviously isn't where it's happening.'" That filmmaker has held crowds in thrall every time she's left the house for the last 30 years. Now, as the co-writer and director of the romantic drama "W.E.," she'll attempt to draw audiences from behind the lens. After four years in relative seclusion, Madonna is returning to the public eye: "W.E.," her second feature film as a director, arrives in theaters Friday; she...

Madonna - Madonna 'reduced To Tears' Over Super Bowl Show

Madonna was announced last year to be the performer at the prestigious Super Bowl half-time show, and the Queen of Pop hasn't been taking the task lightly, if recent reports are to go by. The 53 year old has said that the routines she's been practising for the performance - which typically lasts around 15 minutes - have brought to tears so rigorous have they been. "I'm sorry if I cry. I'm just so exhausted from Super Bowl rehearsals," Madonna told an audience whilst attending a screening of her film 'W.E' at the Ziegfield Theatre in New York. The UK's Metro newspaper reports that the performer seemed shocked by her histrionics, going on to say, "I'm not usually a very sentimental person. Don't hold it against me." Talking about the task of fitting in a suitably epic show in such a short space of time, Madonna commented "I have eight minutes to set up my stage, 12 minutes to put on the greatest show on Earth and seven minutes ...

LMFAO Joining Madonna At Super Bowl?

It's a good thing the Super Bowl provides its halftime performer with the biggest platform in television, because according to the latest rumors Madonna is going to need a seriously massive stage to hold all her guests at the February 5 game. Following reports that Nicki Minaj and M.I.A. as well as "The Voice" coach Cee Lo Green may make appearances comes news that LMFAO could be called off the bench also. A year after his group, the on-hiatus Black Eyed Peas, played the big game, will.i.am told English radio station Capital FM that his party rocking homies will be in the mix. "I'm going to the Super Bowl this year to see my group LMFAO perform with Madonna," he said. "Check that out, Will.i.am Music Group is pretty freaking two for two! One year the Super Bowl, the next year another group part of the Super Bowl in collaboration with Madonna. That's still happening." According to sources, the Madonna asked Green to perform with her at the s...

Madonna will welcome LMFAO to Super Bowl halftime stage

Image
Madonna's Super Bowl halftime debut is coming together nicely, thanks to a Black Eyed Pea and some animal-print pants. The queen of pop will grace the nation's biggest football showdown Feb. 5 in Indianapolis -- and who better to help her put the act together than one of last year's headliners, Will.i.am, who played with his fellow Black Eyed Peas, Fergie, apl.d.ap and Taboo. "I'm going to the Super Bowl this year to see my group LMFAO perform with Madonna," Will told radio station Capital FM, revealing that his "Party Rock" crew will hit the stage with Madge. "Check that out, Will.i.am Music Group is pretty freaking two for two! One year the Super Bowl, the next year another group part of the Super Bowl in collaboration with Madonna. That's still happening." Madonna's no stranger to inventive collaborations. Naturally her 2003 VMA kiss with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera caused an international sensation. In 2006,the materia...

I'm told that the singer called Moore, and the conversation apparently wasn't very long. "Madonna told Demi she was there if she needs anything," my source said. The two most recently hung out at CAA's pre-Golden Globes party at Soho House, where they spent most of the night chatting with each other. Madonna on Graham Norton show

Some are calling it the greatest television interview of the millennium, but whether you're a fan of Madonna or not, her turn on The Graham Norton Show on Friday, February 3rd at 9pm on 3, is worth tuning into - even just to see Graham Norton struck down by "fandom". Next week sees Graham welcoming his "dream guest" to the sofa. Talking about everything from her upcoming album, her new movie, and her supposed rivalry with Lady Gaga, Madonna left Graham raving. "Still high on Madonna love," he said afterwards. But it was the Material Girl's thoughts on Lady Gaga that surprised the king of talk most. Unlike the snide remarks that she made in previous interviews, where she referred to comparisons of herself to Gaga as "reductive", Madonna actually gave the pop princes a compliment. In fact, she agreed that they share a similar sense of humour and that Gaga is quite talented as a performer. "When I first saw her I was really impressed by...

Madonna gets fit for Super Bowl

Madonna is 'working hard' to be fit for her performance at the Super Bowl XLVI Half Time Show next month. The 'Frozen' singer admitted she has suffered some minor injuries lately - including a pulled hamstring and a sore nose after hitting herself with a microphone - but is doing everything possible to ensure she gives the performance of a lifetime during the break in the showpiece NFL game. She said: 'I have a pulled hamstring and I have a little red dot on my nose where I wounded myself with my microphone. 'I'm going to dance and sing my butt off for the Super Bowl. I'm working so hard on it.' Madonna also revealed a 'very special guest' will join her on stage during the 12-minute performance but refused to elaborate on who it will be. The show will take place at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on February 5 and it has been reported she will preview her new single at the event. It has previously been claimed the singer beat off compet...

Madonna cries at the premiere of her film W.E. while citing her late mother Madonna Louises influence

Image
Madonna may be a demanding director, but she revealed a softer side at the Ziegfeld on Tuesday night. She cried while introducing W.E., the movie she directed about the love affair between King Edward VII and American divorcee Wallis Simpson. Im sorry if I cry. Im just so exhausted from Super Bowl rehearsals, Madonna, who will perform during the halftime show, told the well-heeled crowd through her tears. Im not usually a very sentimental person. Dont hold it against me. Citing the influence of her late mother Madonna Louise, the singer said, This movie is about the journey of a womans soul. I want to thank my mother she paused to cry for giving me my life. Madonna, who said her daughter Lourdes advised her against totally inappropriate clothing that would cause people not to take her seriously as a director, called her style on-set as extremely hands-on, detail oriented. Prepared as much as possible. When we asked why a cast member called her demanding, she shot back, Really? I be...

Madonna cries for mother at premiere

Madonna choked back tears when she paid tribute to her mother at the New York premiere of her film 'W.E.' The 53-year-old star was introducing the movie - her directorial debut - at the Cinema Society screening of the film at New York's Ziegfeld Theatre on Monday night (23.01.12) when she became emotional while talking about her late mother Madonna Louise, who died from breast cancer when she was just 30. She told the audience: "I would like to thank my mother. Because, really, this story is the story of a female's, the journey of a female, soul. And my mother gave me life." Beforehand, the singer warned guests she could cry because she was tired from promoting the film - which is a two-tiered story about the relationship between British monarch King Edward VIII and American divorcee Wallis Simpson, and a modern day New Yorker named Wally - and rehearsing for her upcoming Super Bowl half-time performance. Madonna - who earlier this month won a Golden Globe for...

Madonna: Queen of Pop or Queen of Snark?

What's up with Madonna ? The Material Girl has been coming up with some great material lately -- at the expense of her pop music peers. But it's not her music we're talking about! Instead, she's been doling out the disses to big name artists like Lady Gaga and Elton John , zinging the superstars with snarky barbs about their music. So what's Madge so mad about? Here's an update on Madonna's latest snark attacks: In an interview with ABC News' Cynthia McFadden, she addressed the similarities between Madonna's 1989 hit "Express Yourself" and Lady Gaga's "Born This Way." "When I heard it on the radio I said that sounds very familiar," Madonna said of Gaga's song. When asked by McFadden how she felt about it, Madonna responded, "It feels reductive." (Don't know what that means? "Look it up!" Madonna says.) Then there's that ongoing Elton John feud. On the Golden Globes red carpet, the ...

Madonna hoping for Oscar nomination

Madonna has her 'fingers crossed' for an Oscar nomination for her directorial debut 'W.E.'. The 53-year-old singer - who won a Golden Globe for Best Song for the track 'Masterpiece' from the film - would be excited to receive a nod from the Academy Awards but is not too concerned as she still has a half-time performance at the Super Bowl on February 5 to look forward to. She told MTV News: 'Well, the Oscars, the nominations are coming out, and fingers crossed, I hope my movie gets nominated for something. I would be really grateful if it did, but if it doesn't, I got the Super Bowl - keep on going.' Madonna's win at the Golden Globes caused controversy when David Furnish, Sir Elton John's husband, hit out that his partner had not won for the song 'Hello Hello' from 'Gnomeo and Juliet'. He wrote on Facebook: ' Madonna. Best song???? Fk off!!! 'Madonna winning Best Original Song truly shows how these awards have nothing ...

Madonna - Madonna Has Her 'fingers Crossed' For W.E. At Oscars

Madonna hopes her historical movie W.E. will receive a nod at the Oscars and has her "fingers crossed" ahead of the nominations announcement on Tuesday (24Jan12). The pop superstar walked away with a Golden Globe earlier this month (Jan12) for the film's theme track Masterpiece, which won the prize for Best Original Song. Madonna, who directed the movie, is hoping her luck will carry on to the Academy Awards, insisting she would be forever "grateful" if her passion project was recognised by Oscar voters. She says, "Well, the Oscars, the nominations are coming out... and fingers crossed, I hope my movie gets nominated for something. "I would be really grateful if it did, but if it doesn't, I got the Super Bowl - keep on going." The Material Girl will perform at the Super Bowl half-time show in Indiana next month (Feb12).

Madonna: Royals need star quality

Madonna has said it is a shame the royal family aren't revered like movie stars any more. The 53-year-old singer and director - whose directorial debut W.E. tells the story of King Edward VIII's love affair with American divorcee Wallis Simpson - told Grazia magazine she thinks royality such as Prince William and Kate Middleton should be treated like A-listers, not ambassadors for the country. Madonna said: "I think the royal family of the '30s and '40s were the stars of their day. "Edward VIII was really like a movie star. People were in love with him. Now, with the royals, their role in society seems to be reduced to being ambassadors. "I think it's a shame. I like the old-fashioned way." But royal fan Madonna - who recently revealed she would like her next royal film to document the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's first 10 years of marriage - admitted she doesn't move in the same circles as the Windsors. She said: "I don't get...

'Madonna's Globe win was a fluke'

Image
Sir Elton John and David Furnish. DAVID Furnish has questioned if Madonna won a Golden Globe because she agreed to present an award. The Canadian director, who is married to Sir Elton John - who was also nominated in the Best Song category at the event on Sunday (15.01.12) - does not think she should have picked up the prize because no one has heard the song 'Masterpiece' from her directorial debut 'W.E.'. He is quoted by the New York Post newspaper as saying: "I think it was a fluke. When this happens you have to question the integrity of the awards. Did Madonna get the Golden Globe because she attended the awards and agreed to be a presenter? "Can you sing Madonna's song? Can you hum it? It's a song nobody has heard from a film few have seen. The award should have gone to Mary J. Blige or Elton." Despite his comments, David went on to praise Madonna's music - but took a swipe at her movie-making skills. He added: "I like Madonna's m...

Divers recover Madonna intact from shipwreck chapel

GIGLIO, Italy (Reuters) - She was found inside the ship's chapel, submerged up to her shoulders, but in one piece. Fire department divers wrapped her in a white towel, and used a nylon belt to hold it in place so she would not be damaged as they pulled her out. On Saturday, the plaster statue of the Madonna from the doomed Costa Concordia cruise liner stood in a white tent on the port of Giglio, still wrapped in the same towel. Found early on Friday morning, it was only shown to reporters on Saturday. Orange and black equipment bags were piled next to it, and helmets and diving gear hung behind. The man in charge of the team which rescued the statue said he had taken the time to recover the relic when there were still 21 people missing because "it seemed like the right thing to do." "When we entered the crumbled churches around L'Aquila after the earthquake, we always recovered the sacred objects," Fabio told Reuters, asking that his last name not be used...

Madonna knows compromise is important

Madonna believes the key to relationships is "compromise". The twice-wed singer who is currently dating 24-year-old dancer Brahim Zaibat is always ready to change for a partner because she knows how important it is. She said: "I think with all relationships you are going to have to give up something. It is a juggling act, it's about compromising." Madonna who wrote, produced and directed new movie 'W.E.' also revealed she has learned a lot from former spouses Guy Ritchie and Sean Penn when it came to filmmaking. She explained in an interview with Grazia magazine: "Of course I learned from them. I watched closely to see what both of them did, with Sean as an actor and director and Guy as a director. "With Sean, I saw the importance of preparing before you get to the set. "Guy is a much more visual director and he takes a lot of risks when it comes to camera moves and things like that. Madonna Has No Love For Lady Gaga?

Image
I got the moves baby, you got the motion... Lady Gaga has been up front about her admiration for Madonna. But does Madonna share the love? Madonna sounded lukewarm in U.S. interviews, calling her influence on Gaga's music "interesting" and "amusing." Sometimes. "I certainly think she references me a lot in her work. And sometimes I think it's amusing and flattering and well done," Madonna, 53, told ABC News in a television interview. "There's a lot of ways to look at it. I can't really be annoyed by it...because obviously, I've influenced her," the pop star said. The comparisons between the two divas, both known for combining provocative stunts with catchy dance-pop hits, came to a head when Gaga released her Born This Way single last February. The song was instantly likened to Madonna's 1989 hit Express Yourself . "When I heard it on the radio, Isaid that sounds very familiar," Madonna said. Asked if that felt...

He also had signs professing his love for the pop icon, cops said. Linharts lawyer, Kevin Kitson , says his client never should have been arrested.
