Madonna men are upset by Concordia
A successful Madonna University men's basketball campaign ended a bit prematurely Wednesday night in the opening round of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference playoffs.
The host Crusaders, the third seed, were upended by sixth-seed Concordia University, 79-65.
The loss leaves MU with a final record of 18-13; the Cardinals moved into the WHAC semifinals on Saturday at 15-16.
Rocko Holmes and John Schaeffer paced Concordia with 19 points each; Austin Cook and Andrew Patrick added 17 and 14, respectively. Holmes also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
Madonna, which trailed 37-26 at halftime, got a team-high 16 points from sophomore point guard Bobby Naubert.
Sophomore guard Matt Jenkins and junior forward Eoghann Stephens finished with 13 and 10, respectively.
Senior Tyler Coker just missed a double-double with nine points and 13 rebounds.
A Donald Owens basket with 11:41 remaining pulled MU to within 50-48, but the Crusaders never got closer than five points the rest of the way.
Madonna shot only 27-of-70 from the floor, including 3-of-20 from three-point range.
S'CRAFT 85, MACOMB 71: Richmond Jackson's 26 points and nine rebounds enabled Schoolcraft College (17-10, 9-7) to earn an MCCAA Eastern Conference win at home Wednesday over Macomb Community College (16-11, 7-9).
The Ocelots led 43-35 at halftime after holding the Monarchs to just two points over the final 10 minutes. They also got help by shooting six foul shots at the end of the half after a Macomb coach was slapped with a pair of technical fouls.
Although leading scorer Karl Moore was limited to nine points, Lydell Mason added 15 points and five rebounds. Daniel Hill chipped in 14 points to help pick up the slack.
Ashton Curd and Patrick Ferrell each scored 20 points for Macomb.
Schoolcraft was 16-of-25 from the foul line, the Monarchs 6-of-8.
